How to install and use the same WhatsApp account on up to 4 smartphones

May 31, 2023 by Sarbasish Basu
use the same WhatsApp account on other smartphones

While it is normal these days to have multiple, or at least 2 phones, it doesn’t make enough sense to have a WhatsApp account tied to every phone number you have. You can do that if there are valid reasons, but all that screws up your personal communication system. But what makes enough sense is to have the ability to access the same WhatsApp account on multiple devices.

That way, you can see and reply to messages with ease, or carry out other WhatsApp activities no matter which phone you are currently using. WhatsApp recently introduced the ability to use your WhatsApp account on 4 handsets. That said, I will talk about how to use your WhatsApp account on multiple handsets, today in this tutorial.

So, without any further delay, let’s get started with how to use your WhatsApp account on 4 handsets to effortlessly send and receive WhatsApp messages.

Access WhatsApp on other handsets

In the screenshots, I have mentioned primary and secondary for easier understanding of which handsets are used to carry out each step. Primary refers to the handset where WhatsApp is up and ready, and secondary refers to the handset where you want to set up WhatsApp as a linked device.

  1. Download and open WhatsApp on the secondary phone from the Google Play Store, and hence open the app.
  1. Go through the basic steps like selecting the language, and hence tap on ‘Agree and continue‘.

  1. When you get to the screen to enter the mobile number, do not enter the number. Instead, tap on the three dots, and then tap on ‘Link to existing account‘.

  1. Now, you will get a QR code that has to be scanned by another device where WhatsApp is installed.

  1. On the other or primary handset, open WhatsApp, tap on the three dots, and hence tap on ‘Linked devices‘.

  1. In the next step, tap on ‘Link a device‘.

  1. The camera will open up where you have to scan the QR code that is displayed on the secondary handset.
  1. After the scan is successful, which shouldn’t take long, the authentication process will be carried out, and you will instantly get the WhatsApp messages on the secondary handset.

Here you can not just reply to messages and read messages on arrival, you can also see statuses, create groups, and do a lot more.

Abilities and limitations

Even if you do not have internet connectivity on the primary handset, you can still get or send WhatsApp messages. It means, even if you leave one of your handsets at your home, you can still use WhatsApp.

Besides that, you can tweak WhatsApp settings, change your profile pictures, and do most things that you can do from the primary handset.

One limitation which I found is, you cannot post statuses from the secondary handset logged in with the same WhatsApp number. However, that is not a serious limitation as you send and receive messages, which serve the basic purpose.

If you want to link another device to your WhatsApp account, simply follow all the steps again on the new handset. If you have linked your web browser with your WhatsApp account, that will not be counted in the 4-device limit, whatsoever.

So, that’s how to use WhatsApp on multiple devices. Do you have any questions? Feel free to comment on the same below.
