Google Docs is currently one of the best cloud-based cross-platform word processing tools with several features for productivity and collaboration. However, features offered in Google Docs, or any other word-processing program might often fall short for users with special requirements, and that’s exactly when you need to depend on third-party programs or extensions in the case of Google Docs. Thankfully the Google Docs extension library is rich enough to cater to most.
One feature, which is missing in Google Docs is the line counter. Using the line counter, you can instantly find the number of lines or sentences in a Google Docs file. This can be useful for students or SEO enthusiasts as the number of sentences in an article or the average number of words in a sentence directly impact how difficult it is to read or the readability score. I don’t think Google will add this feature in Google Docs anytime soon, and hence I am here with how to use a line counter in Google Docs.
So, without any further delay, let’s get started with how to use a line counter in Google Docs.
Downloading the Outwrite extension
- Outwrite is an extension for Google Docs that suggests potential improvements for the documents and additionally displays the number of characters, words, or other important statistics about the current document.
- To download or connect the Outwrite extension with Google Docs, click on ‘Extensions’, hover over to ‘Add-ons’, and then click on ‘Get add-ons’.

- Now, search for Outwrite in the search bar, and click on the only search result that appears.

- Hence, click on ‘Install’, and then click on ‘Continue’, when the installer asks for necessary permissions.

- In the next step, you have to select the email address that you want to associate with Outwrite, by clicking on the same.

- Outwrite needs some permissions to work. Simply tap on ‘Allow’ to continue, if you don’t have any issues with the permissions that Outwrite requires.

Now Outwrite is connected to Google Docs.
Using the Line counter on Google Docs
Now that the Outwrite add-on is connected to Google Docs, open an existing document, or compose a new one on Google Docs. Once you are done, click on ‘Extensions’ again, hover over to ‘Outwrite’, and then click on ‘Start’.

The Outwrite panel will open up on the right side of the document. Here you can find suggestions for improving your document. Additionally, you can also find useful document statistics, as shown in the screenshot below.
You can also find the number of sentences. That refers to the number of lines in the document. That’s how to use a line counter in Google Docs using the Outwrite extension.
